Suffer from Peyronie’s Disease and Erectile Dysfunction?- Why an Implant is THE Best Option.
Suffer from Peyronie’s Disease and Erectile Dysfunction?: Why an Implant is the Best Option.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common conditions that impact men (more than diabetes, high blood pressure, depression). It is strongly associated with age: the older you are the more likely you may develop ED. Peyronie’s Disease (PD) on the other can impact men of any age. In fact, I see men with Peyronie’s disease at the age of 18, all the way up to the age of 90+.
PD often occurs with ED. In men with PD, 50% have some degree of ED. Although the cases are multifactorial, in men with both PD and ED, an inflatable penile implant is the recommended treatment option. This is the recommendation from the AUA (American Urological Association) guidelines on Peyronie’s Disease. The penile implant provides a reliable way of ensuring good quality erections after corrective surgery for the penile curvature.
The severity of your curvature would determine what additional maneuvers are needed at the time of surgery. In men with mild curvature (<30’), curvature may simply improve with cycling or routine use of the penile implant over few months. In those with moderate curvature, additional techniques like modeling, micro-slits, scratch can yield adequate curvature correction. But in those with very severe curvature (typically 60 degrees of more), plaque incision or excision may be necessary to allow for curvature correction and ensure adequate expansion to counteract loss of penile length or girth.
Having a surgeon, who can navigate these issues intra-operatively is extremely important to ensure that you have the best possible outcome with the fastest recovery.
